Title: End of Year Review

CONGRATULATIONS! You made it. Your students made it.

The end of the school year is just around the corner — and what a great opportunity for your students to reflect on how resilient and adaptable they have been this year with the constant changes in learning environments and society.

One useful exercise for students to complete is to revisit the goals they had set in September and throughout the school year. During the review, we can also encourage our students to celebrate their unplanned successes. Having said that, there will inevitably be some goals that students did not achieve. Rather than viewing these as failures, we should encourage students to see incomplete goals as an opportunity for growth.

This year-end self-reflection is of course also beneficial for educators. You had likely set goals for yourself and your class at the beginning of the school year. Now is the perfect time to celebrate your accomplishments and identify opportunities for growth and development for next year.

Here are some tips to support a Growth Mindset using All About Me Portfolio:

  1. Create a Teacher Tag for Highlight Reel (or #ExitInterview) so that students can select and tag their 5 favourite memories and achievements from the year
  2. Have students write an About Me journal for what they want their next teacher to know about them (e.g., My skills, My interests, My fears, My expectations, a concern, a wish for next school year, etc.)
  3. Have students add a journal entry to reflect on their favourite memory from this school year
  4. Have students review all previous S.M.A.R.T. Goals and reflect on how they achieved their goal OR how they refined their goal/action plan and why
  5. Add Achievements to their portfolio from the School Pathway, including a reflection on how they accomplished that feat and what they are most proud of
  6. BONUS: Use your Student View to add a journal to share one way you’ve displayed resilience this school year (and we sure know there’s more than one!)

Here are a few valuable resources that can help support students in these tasks while using All About Me:

Title: End of Year Review

Learning is a process where knowledge is presented to us, then shaped through understanding, discussion and reflection ~ Paulo Freire

You made it! Your students made it! Kudos to all of you.

The end of the school year is just around the corner — what a great opportunity for your students to reflect on how resilient and adaptable they have been this year with the constant changes in learning environments and society.

One useful exercise for students to complete is to revisit the goals they had set in September and throughout the school year. As students reached their goals, they may have recognised the value of hard work, inspiring them to set new targets and develop a growth mindset. During our review, we can also encourage our students to celebrate their unplanned successes. There will inevitably be some goals that students did not achieve. Rather than viewing these as failures, encourage students to see incomplete goals as an opportunity for growth. Invite students to reflect on internal and external challenges they encountered when working towards goals this school year and identify strategies they can use to hit goal targets next school year.

This year-end self-reflection is of course also beneficial for educators. You had likely set goals for yourself and your class at the beginning of the school year. Now is the perfect time to celebrate your accomplishments and identify opportunities for growth and development for next year.

  1. Create a Teacher Tag for Highlight Reel (or #ExitInterview) so that students can select and tag their 5 favourite memories and achievements from the year in a Portfolio
  2. Invite students to create an Exit Portfolio to review their accomplishments and work, reflect on their growth, and provide closure on the school year
  3. Have students add a journal entry in a Portfolio to share one thing they are most proud of accomplishing this school year or write a letter of advice to share something they learned with a student entering that grade next year
  4. Have students review all previous S.M.A.R.T. Goals and reflect on how they achieved their goal OR how they refined their goal/action plan and why
  5. Have students create a Transition Portfolio to document and reflect on the steps that they have taken to ensure a smooth transition from elementary/middle to high school or high school to post-secondary; have them use the Present Feature to share with a trusted adult
  6. Invite graduating students to complete the Preparing for Post-Secondary Activity (5 things to do before you leave high school & 5 things to do the summer before you head out to post-secondary) and Portfolio Checklist
  7. Invite students to keep track of their volunteer and extra-curricular experiences by adding them to their Resume
